(28 Aug 2013) Defence Ministers from the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) opened their annual meeting in Brunei on Wednesday.
Dubbed as ADMM Plus, 2013, the defence ministers are expected to discuss various range of issues, including the ASEAN defence cooperation, as well as regional and multilateral security issues.
The meeting will be followed by the second ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting Plus (ADMM+), a forum established during Vietnam's 2010 ASEAN chairmanship that consists of the 10 ASEAN nations plus their dialogue partners, which include the US, Japan, China, and South Korea.
While issues involving the South China Sea dispute and China's position in South East Asia are expected to be high on the agenda, the forum could possibly be overshadowed by affairs involving the Syrian regime's suspected use of chemical weapons against its own people.
US Defence Minister Chuck Hagel, who will be in Brunei to meet his Asian counterparts, has said that US military forces stand ready to strike Syria at once if President Barack Obama gives the order.
