Released in India for an MRP of Rs. 41,500, the S4 is plastic all around and bears close resemblance to the S III. Narrow bezel makes it possible for the screen size to be 5 inches (0.2 inches bigger than the S III) while keeping the overall size almost the same. I loved the chrome band on the side which gives the handset a pretty neat & sophisticated appearance. The battery door seems to have a reflective texturized diamond pattern, but that's really just a print. The texture doesn't provide for any extra grip and gives the same old shiny-slimy feel. The S4, in a nutshell is an improvement over the S III given flatter edges and shrunken bezels.
The buttons on the side give a slightly more premium feel and definitely have a much better and re-assuring tactile feedback. Buttons in Samsung's previous phones, in my experience, tend to sink in a little into the body.
Samsung also packs a wealth of sensors in and around its body. The following image would give you a better sense of what I am trying to say. Read THIS article to know more about all these sensors.
Considering beautiful designs of the HTC One & the iPhone 5, I don't think Samsung really had to go with plastic once again. There could be two possible reasons as to why Samsung did this -- removable battery and a thinner, lighter body. But I don't think these should be such big concerns given the fact that your closest rivals are manifesting stunning looking counter-devices.
Running through the specs quickly, the device features a 1.6 GHz Octa Core processor (1.6 GHz quad core + 1.2 GHz quad core) with the big.LITTLE technology implemented. Basically, there are 4 powerful cores and 4 less powerful cores and only a set of them work depending on whether the demand is high or low. Essentially, all 8 cores never work together. The device also packs 2 GB RAM, 16GB on-board storage, 13 MP f/2.2 aperture camera, long lasting 2,600 mAh battery, 64 GB microSD card slot & a really powerful GPU.
Overall the device feels light, thin and durable despite the use of plastic. The silvery coastal band (not metal for sure) makes it stand out of the previous Galaxy S series smartphones & exhibits a classier look. Light weight, slimmer body and a larger 5" screen definitely adds to its poise. Samsung continues to tell us that people still want more features, larger screen & better performance as opposed to a gorgeous looking device. Well, whatever rocks your boat, Samsung!
The S4 definitely wears the hardware crown in the Android universe. No device stands up against the S4 in terms of absolute benchmarks.
