Manchester City's Raheem Sterling said it was a "massive step" that players took a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement on the opening night of the Premier League's return.
Football roared backed into action last night — with controversy from the start and a familiar red card.
The virus pandemic meant fans watched from home as Aston Villa hosted Sheffield United in the first top-flight game in 100 days, followed by Man City v Arsenal.
Both games were played in eerily-empty grounds. The teams wore shirts backing Black Lives Matter and held a minute’s silence for Covid-19 victims.
And there was the familiar balls-up as goal-line technology denied Sheffield an early strike.
The Hawkeye system appeared to fail and the ref did not refer the decision to VAR.
Stars, staff and officials took a knee for the BLM movement as soon as the game kicked off at Villa Park, Birmingham.
They wore heart-shaped badges paying tribute to NHS workers. The game finished 0-0.
