The Taliban has turned over the body of Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui, who was murdered while documenting the continuing fighting in Afghanistan on Friday, to the Red Cross, according to official sources.
Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani expressed condolences to Siddiqui's family, saying the journalist, who worked for an international news agency, was murdered while documenting Taliban crimes in Kandahar.
In a speech to the United Nations Security Council on Friday, Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla denounced the journalist's death. Officials in Kabul stated the Indian embassy was in contact with Afghan authorities for bringing Siddiqui's body remains back.
Siddiqui was slain during battles in Kandahar's Spin Boldak area, according to Afghanistan's Tolo News, which cited sources. For the past several days, intense combat has reportedly been taking place near Kandahar, particularly around Spin Boldak. Pakistan has been accused by Afghanistan of protecting Taliban fighters who claim to have taken control of the Pakistani border crossing.
