Pregnancy loss & what to know when TTC is an important topic where we look specifically at early pregnancy losses and miscarriages. In today’s video for Reproductive Health Month (RHM2021), Dr Stephan Volschenk from Vitalab Fertility Clinic in Sandton tackles this very sensitive topic which is more common than we think!

The most important thing to know about early miscarriage or pregnancy loss is that is extremely common even though it is devastating for each patient to experience. An early miscarriage is defined as a pregnancy loss that occurs during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. The pregnancy loss mostly occurs even before we can see a fetus with heartbeat on an ultrasound which is usually from about 7 to 8 weeks of pregnancy.

Several things can cause an early pregnancy loss such as a miscarriage. The most common cause is the embryo does not have the correct number of chromosomes. Here Dr Volschenk explains to you the discussion around normal vs abnormal embryos and their role in your early pregnancy loss. As women get older, this number of abnormal eggs or embryos gets higher unfortunately. So older women are more likely to have an early pregnancy loss or miscarriage and any given the chromosome abnormalities.
