Freelance authors sued publishers for including their articles in electronic databases without their permission. The court found that the privilege to use their contributions as part of the collective work did not extend to using them in isolation in the databases. The electronic and print publishers infringed the authors' copyrights, and it is important to get permission before using copyrighted works.
