More than 200 attendees have marked the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Bismarck Sea in a service at RAAF Base Richmond on Thursday, 7 March 2013. The Battle of the Bismarck Sea ran from 2-4 March 1943, and saw a combined force of 90 aircraft from the Royal Australian Air Force and United States Army Air Force strike a Japanese troopship convoy sailing from Rabaul to Lae. The Allied success in this battle greatly influenced the outcome of the ground campaign in New Guinea.
