Clare welcomes you to join her in The Farmyard Garden’s Kitchen Garden.
Clare, along with her husband Duncan, farms 130 acres in Staffordshire UK (Equivalent to zone 8b) where they have created a home allotment to grow their own food. Adopting a minimal dig raised bed gardening approach, Clare also has a 20ft x 12ft polytunnel from First Tunnels and two old 8x6 Halls glass greenhouses on the main garden.
This is Clare’s first full season with this new vegetable garden. It’s been an incredibly steep learning curve but a challenge she has relished. The highlight has been sharing the journey with you.
In this video Clare takes you through all the things in the vegetable garden that is yet to harvest, dispelling the myth that the season is over now that we are in October. From Oca and Artichokes, to parsnips and cabbages, there is plenty left to harvest as we move in to the colder months.
Aside from crops left in the ground, in this episode Clare will be harvesting all of her winter squashes and pumpkins today. She is super excited about this, as you’ll see when you watch. There’s a pretty good October harvest from the plot in this video, including a quick parsnip reveal
She is also going to take you through the list of things she’s planting out at the end of October, before she starts sowing her winter and spring seeds in the greenhouse.
Far from feeling the season is over, the greenhouse is looking pretty jam packed! There is so much to grow over winter. Are you an all year round grower, or do you prefer to put your growing space / plot to bed over winter and enjoy a well earned break?
