The age of the Sphinx is a topic of ongoing discussion between traditional egyptologists and a more recent generation of independent thinkers that dates back thousands of years. These people argue that the massive limestone statue is far older than archaeologists and Egyptologists think. According to orthodox archaeologists, the Sphinx was constructed between 2558 and 2532 BCE. "You always have to follow the evidence wherever it goes, and that's always been my Royal thumb, that not everything is always the way people say it is even if they're quoting authorities." But, the Sphinx controversy began when American journalist and independent Egyptologist John Anthony West raised the issue of erosion in the early 1990s.
West was intrigued when he discovered mentions of water erosion on the Sphinx in the writings of early mathematician and egyptologist R.A. Schwaller de Lubitz. He shocked the scholarly community by asserting that the Sphinx was carved 10,000 years ago before Egypt was a desert. West stated that Academia had missed a crucial feature because the sculpture's body showed clear signs of water degradation. Westbound scientists shared his remark about discovering a different history than was generally accepted after he evaluated the Sphinx age. "Honestly, when I first went to Egypt with John Anthony West in 1990. Before I got off the plane, I thought that this would be a simple open and shut case; I would prove him wrong."
