Title: Sea Level in the Private Sector: Translating the Science for Business Mandates

Abstract: This talk explores the connection between sea level science and business. Having been on both sides, I will discuss the increasing importance of the science in the private sector and its ramifications. While most people think of physical risk to infrastructure and businesses as the primary application of sea level science, there is growing demand for climate models and scenario analysis -- including sea level -- for mandates and compliance. As more companies and governments adopt ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) mandates, there is increasing pressure to better quantify the regulatory exposure and transition risk of institutions. This requires a better understanding of not just how climate change will affect corporations, but how individual corporations affect the climate.
