In Japan, Pinball is a major business. Known as pachinko, the multi-billion - dollar industry is dominated by Japanese Koreans, an unwelcome and ill-treated immigrant group for decades.
Korea is already under Japanese rule. Teenaged Sunja loses her father when she is thirteen and falls in love with a Yakuza (A Japanese gangster). Later when she is pregnant, she realizes that he is married and has a wife and three daughters in Japan. Later, a minister passing through on his way to Japan, offers marriage to Sunja and take her to Japan. The story then tracks how Sunja and her family face racism, stereotyping, and hardships in a hostile country and how her two sons find work in the Pachinko gambling industry, a difficult choice that will determine the family's fate for decades to come.
An immersive read spanning across four generations of one family. A story of love, a family's struggle to fit into a society that treats them as contempt, and the history of Koreans in Japan.
