Fleeing all of life’s responsibilities like 🧚🏻 I’ve had my eye on North Yorkshire Water Park's Zip Line ever since it opened so naturally we had to make a stop on the way back from a few days in Scarborough and suss out the situation…
This isn’t an adaptive activity so I’d talked to the team about my situation beforehand, and although it’s a *lot* of stairs to the top, it felt like it could be doable for me - especially since I’m used to having to do stairs where I live and for bizarre reasons, I often find doing stairs less difficult than standing in just one spot?!
The team on-site were amazing and did my harness for me themselves so I could get back into my wheelchair and stay seated for as long as possible during the briefing, and they let us up before everybody else so I could stop and rest on the stairs if needed. There were platforms/stopping points at each level, and as we went first we didn’t have to stand for long at the top either.
Even so, I had my doubts over whether I could or should do it right up until the moment we got started, but oh my goodness, I’m so glad we did. It was so much fun to do something I felt like I was craving, along with my best friend, surrounded by beautiful views, and I’ll definitely do it again… just not in a hurry because let me tell you, I was paying for it as badly as you would expect afterwards 🫠☠️
It wouldn’t seem a big deal to many people but a few years ago I couldn’t even walk a lap around my building. I genuinely can’t believe I managed all those steps and still enjoyed it, and that I was well enough to sit and type this caption just a couple of days after.
Of course it doesn’t mean that I’m magically better, or that this is something I could do routinely, or that others with my condition would experience a similar trajectory. It has nothing to do with my attitude or how determined I am or any other ableist assumptions like that. The truth is that I’m learning how to manage things in ways that work for me, and I’ve been blessed with incredible luck. And no matter if or how long it lasts, I know for certain that I’ll make the most of this however and whenever I can ✨
