Marabou is a Swedish chocolate brand first launched in 1916 in Sweden.
The brand was founded by the Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst (1868–1946), who already had launched the same chocolate recipe in Norway under the name Freia with great success – in the beginning of the 20th century Freia owned over 50% of the Norwegian market. During the first world war the continental European markets were closed, so the company decided to expand to Sweden. In 1916 the brand Marabou was created in Sweden; the name Freja was already taken in Sweden, the company decided to name their Swedish branch after the stork in the logo. However, the actual production didn't start until 1919 due to shortages in cocoa supply caused by World War I.
A Daim bar is a Swedish chocolate bar made from crunchy almond caramel covered in milk chocolate.
Daim was created by Marabou in Sweden in the 1950s. Marabou originally wanted to produce a version of the American Heath Co.'s bar; its vice president Lars Anderfelt inquired about licensing Heath's exact recipe. The Heath Co. refused but gave Anderfeldt a list of their ingredients. From this, Marabou created their own recipe, testing it in Stockholm in 1952 with great success. It was launched under the name Dajm throughout Sweden and Norway the next year, Finland in 1963, and Denmark in 1971. It was renamed "Daim" in most countries in 1990, although it continued to be marketed in the United Kingdom and Ireland as Dime. The brand was purchased by the American company Kraft Foods in 1993 and is now held by Mondelez International, which Kraft spun off in 2012.
Mondelez International, Inc. (/ˌmoʊndəˈliːz/), often stylized as Mondelēz, is an American multinational confectionery, food, holding and beverage company based in Chicago, Illinois, which employs approximately 80,000 individuals around the world. It consists of the global snack and food brands of Kraft Foods Inc. after the October 2012 spin-off of its North American grocery-foods products. The Mondelez name is a coined word adopted in 2012 that was suggested by Kraft Foods employees, and is derived from the Latin word mundus ("world") and delez, a fanciful modification of the word "delicious."
