Today would’ve been my dad’s 80th birthday.
He died earlier this year and one of the hardest parts of his death was feeling alone and unsupported in it because of my parents’ break up.
I couldn’t go to my mom for support because of her broken relationship with my dad and my relationship with other family members and relatives changed after the break up when I was a kid, leaving my brother and me mostly on our own. 😢
It’s tempting to see divorce as a difficult but temporary phase in life. And perhaps for parents it can be because they can move on, find love again and start over with a new family.
But for children, the break up is a permanent change to our lives and the consequences are lifelong.
If you’re a child of divorce who recently lost a parent my heart goes out to you. It’s not easy.
