STORYLINE:
As US voters headed to the ballot box in the much-anticipated presidential election, an American-themed restaurant in Paris was holding a poll of its own on Tuesday.
It was inviting diners to choose their favourite candidate by eating an "Obama burger" or a "Romney omelette."
When the "Breakfast in America" restaurant stops serving for the day, the owner will tally up how many of each dish have been sold and declare an overall winner.
The "Obama burger" - named after Democrat Barack Obama - consists of a beef burger, sausages and pickle.
The "Romney omelette" - named after Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney - is described as "plain."
While the real political contest is to close to call, restaurant staff are convinced Obama will secure victory in their own version of the election.
"I'm fairly certain Obama will win here in France. In America, it's going to be very very tight. I'm a superstitious person, I feel my heart Obama is going to win but I know it's going to be close," said Craig Carlson, owner of "Breakfast in America."
However, some Romney-supporting diners were less than impressed with the "plain" dish named after their choice of candidate.
"This morning we had some customers from America who were very unhappy," Carlson said.
"They were Romney supporters and were offended. We tried to explain it's just a joke and we tried to put a little slant on it. He always says he is a regular American, a plain American. So we tried to put a nice spin on it, have fun but they were not buying it."
After months of campaigning and billions of dollars spent in the battle for leadership of the world's most powerful country, Obama and Romney were in a virtual nationwide tie ahead of Tuesday's election.
