Fashion's 'Rare Bird' Iris Apfel dies aged 102
Hello and welcome to News Stargazing Celebrity, the channel where we bring you the latest news and gossip about the stars. Today, we have some sad news to share with you. Iris Apfel, the influential fashion icon and interior decorator who helped restore the White House for nine presidents, died on Friday at the age of 102. Her agent, Lori Sale, confirmed her death and said "working alongside her was the honor of a lifetime".
Iris Apfel was born in New York City in 1921 and studied art history and art school. She worked as a copywriter for Women's Wear Daily and as an assistant to illustrator Robert Goodman. In 1948, she married Carl Apfel, and two years later, they launched their textile firm Old World Weavers, which specialized in reproducing fabrics from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. They traveled the world in search of rare and beautiful textiles and collected a vast array of costume jewelry and accessories.
Apfel was also an eminent authority on antique fabrics and consulted on restoration projects at the White House for nine presidents, from Truman to Clinton. She was known for her flamboyant style, outspoken personality, and oversized eyeglasses. She described herself as "the world's oldest living teenager" and said "more is more and less is a bore".
In 2005, her personal collection of vintage and designer clothes and accessories became the subject of an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, titled Rara Avis (Rare Bird): the Irreverent Iris Apfel. It was the first time the Met had focused on a living female who wasn't a designer. The exhibition was a huge success and traveled to several other museums. Apfel became a fashion icon and inspired many people with her eclectic and creative style.
In 2014, she was the focus of a documentary by Albert Maysles, called Iris, which captured her life and work. She also starred in several campaigns for brands like H&M, eBay, and Citroën, and even had a Barbie doll made in her likeness. She was honored with many awards and accolades, including the Women Together Special Award of the Year in 2016 and the Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2019.
Iris Apfel was a visionary, a leader, and a joyful iconoclast who broke all the rules with incredible taste. She will be remembered as one of the most original and influential figures in the world of fashion and design. She once said, "I don't have any rules, because I'd only be breaking them". She lived her life with passion, curiosity, and humor, and left behind a legacy of beauty and inspiration.
We send our condolences to her family, friends, and fans. Rest in peace, Iris Apfel. You will be missed.
