Inuk woman Mary Simon has been sworn in as Canada's 30th governor-general, becoming the first Indigenous person to hold the position since its inception.
The appointment comes as the country struggles to grapple with the legacy of its treatment of Indigenous people, after the discovery of more than a thousand unmarked graves at state-funded schools for separated Indigenous children.
''The discoveries of unmarked graves on the grounds of residential schools in recent weeks has horrified me, along with all Canadians," Ms Simon said.
"My view is that reconciliation is a way of life and requires work every day. Reconciliation is getting to know one another."
