Laurie MacCaskill was diagnosed in 2006. Her first symptom was a lightning bolt through her body that left her with pain in her back. Doctors told her she had gas or she had pulled a muscle, to not worry so much. Her instincts told her otherwise. She was persistent with interviewing doctors, thinking that she may have an infection. She was losing weight and needed to find better answers. After her diagnosis she started chemotherapy to shrink the tumor and ended up with a biliary obstruction. Days later she went in for a Whipple procedure. Post-surgery she started what would be three years of chemotherapy, only to find that tumors had returned in her liver. She found the strength to fight again and is here 7 1/2 years later to share her story. Laurie is a patient advocate in the community and was introduced to the Hirshberg Foundation through Dr. Howard Reber who is the Laboratory Director at the Translational Hirshberg Laboratory at UCLA.
