In 1972 British Rail ceased operation of passenger services between Exeter
and Okehampton on the former southern route between Exeter/Plymouth
and North Cornwall. since 1972 only quarry traffic as been the regular stake
up to Meldon Quarry however since the arrival of the Dartmoor Railway this
traffic has been completely fassed out, although may be soon to make a
return as ballast shall be required for HS2 from a locality other than
Mountsorrel.
In 1997 Devon County Council and then Wales and West trains began
operation of a summer sunday only Exeter - Okehampton shuttle, this
ending in the summer of 2019.
Following the ending of the Dartmoor Railway in 2020, Network Rail have
accquired the track from Coleford Junction to Meldon Quarry (excluding
the remains of the once busy yard) and just over 1 year later have
managed mainly by the co-operation of local enthusiasts/council and GWR
have managed to re-open the line back to passenger service between
Exeter and Okehampton with the main goal of connecting Tavistock and
joining the now "Gunislake Branch" at Bere Alston to complete the former
Southern Railway mainline.
