Our retirement sailing adventure continues to unfold as we undertake by far our longest passage yet - 650nm from Baiona, NW Spain, to Porto Santo, a volcanic island on the NE side of Madeira.
The journey took us just under five full days at an average of 5.8 knots and max 8.0 knots. We were pleased with that given our conservative approach to reducing sail. Winds were very light for the first day and then stayed at 15-25 knots. Initially from the NW and then from the NE. That meant that we were running with the wind the whole way and that is not the boats favourite.
In this trip we pulled together all our experience so far and really enjoyed ourselves! We now know we can manage longer passages and believe that the Atlantic crossing is within our grasp.
This trip was the best by far.... so far. :)
Still practising with trying to record the experiences, but to be honest mainly just prioritising food, sleep, and keeping watch. We have that working well now but it's still very tiring. Maybe it's an age thing? Perhaps as we continue to develop we will manage to get some better shots of the boat, and of life aboard, that will get across more of the experience?
One issue that we noticed when compiling the videos, was the noise from the autohelm hydraulic ram. After some investigation we realised that it only does that with a big following sea, since it works hard to prevent the boat yawing. Whilst we do hear it working, the camera seems to have picked it up disproportionately, and annoyingly. So, we will have to get a better microphone to pick up our voice commentary, rather than boat noises!
Thank you for watching.
