The Toraja are an ethnic group living in the mountains of the northern part of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, the population is estimated to be around 1 million inhabitants, with around 500,000 inhabitants of whom still live in the Regency of Tana Toraja the Toraja Regency to the North, and County Mamasa.

The word toraja comes from the Bugis language, to;, which means it's "people who dwelt in the land of the above ". The colonial Government of the Toraja tribe was named the Netherlands in 1909.

Before the 20th century, torajans lived in autonomous villages. They are still embraced animism and untouched by the outside world. In the early 1900 's, the Netherlands missionary came and spread the Christian religion. After the more open to the outside world in 1970 's, the Tana Toraja Regency became the symbol of Indonesia's tourism.

Tongkonan is the traditional Torajan House that stood on top of a pile of wood and decorated with carved in red, black, and yellow. The word "tongkonan " comes from the Torajan tongkon (" sit").

Tongkonan is the Centre of social life of the Toraja.

the toraja have some custom clothing, including;

1. Sepa Tallung books.

This is a Torajan traditional clothes clothes down to the knees. SEPA Tallung Book was the Tana toraja custom clothing used by men. Equipped with an other accessories such as kandaure, gayang, lipa.

2. Pokko Clothes.

The indigenous Toraja shirt this one is a shirt with short sleeves with a predominance of yellow, red and white. Pokko is a custom dress shirts used by women.

3. Kandore.

In addition to the dress pokko, kandore is also the customary clothes of tana toraja that cater to women. Custom clothes on this one is a custom shirt decorated beads that are made into necklaces, bracelets, belts and headbands.

Tana Toraja has two types of ceremonial popular Signs Solo and Tuka. Signs Solo is a funeral, while Tuka was the ceremony over the newly renovated traditional House.

Funeral Signs Solo is a series of complex events and customary ties need not cost a bit.

Pa'Gellu dance is a dance that is quite well known in the area of South Sulawesi. This dance is usually shown at events such as weddings, parties, welcoming people and others.
