Reaction shots are very common shots, although many of them are technically unnecessary. Most of them don't advance the plot, so the question is why do videomakers and directors use reaction shots?
The common answer you'll find is that reaction shots show characters' emotions. That's true, but I've got other ideas as well. I believe many reaction shots are inherently persuasive, attempting to get the audience to feel what they are being shown in reaction shots --- or to have their own emotions confirmed by seeing them displayed in reaction shots.
This video shows you what reaction shots are, where to find them, and how to complicate them (if you are editing or making videos).
Movies used as examples:
-- The Karate Kid
-- Star Wars: Episode IV
-- Hoosiers
-- Vera Drake
-- Rear Window
