This is an analysis of the soap opera "Yo Soy Betty La Fea" [1999] written by Colombian screenwriter Fernando Gaitán. This romantic comedy with an air of tragedy, shows contradictions that go beyond the Beauty and Ugly, the Poor and Rich or the Man and Woman.
The contradictions turn to human virtues and vices: greed, anger, lies, pride, loyalty, honesty, effort and the consequences of an unbalanced love.
Armando and Betty's relationship is measured by their disagreements in the development of their personalities, we can understand that they were both fools in their own way, as we can see with Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in Janne Austen's unforgettable novel [Pride and Prejudice].
The questioning between choosing the turbulences of life or the sweet misfortunes of death is observed to a certain extent by the character Armando, as he blames himself for his actions and thinks about the possibility of never having his love corresponded again. On the other hand, Betty, in a moment of anger and sadness, chooses revenge as the remedy to heal her deepest wounds, leading both to complete madness.
In this turbulent scenario, the exposure of truth was inevitable, a necessary and purifying sacrifice. The attempt to no longer change the other, but themselves, brought Betty and Armando a new search for virtues: forgiveness, compassion, humility and commitment to the truth.
The character Betty lived in a scenario built for her own victimization. From her protectionist family, her disarrangements in fitting into society, to the unhealthy relationship environment in which she worked. However, the story itself shows that the victim can become the executioner, that virtues can turn into vices and that misfortune, as well as success, depend much more on the choices of the characters themselves than the influences that surround them.
I expose my analysis as an attempt to extract some value from this iconic romantic comedy, which, although it does not compare the geniality of some 'Shakespeare', it can reveal elements of human nature to us with a certain deepness. Thank you for reading and sharing :)
