Hi this video explains about the basic working of exhaust braking and its advantages please watch the entire video and learn it, as you all know brakes are used to slowdown the vehicle or to make them to a stop. Exhaust braking is a braking technology used in diesel fuel powered vehicles.

Before learning about the exhaust braking system you have to understand the working of a Diesel engine.

I exhaust breaking what happens is that, it retard the speed of the engine. A butterfly valve is located at the outlet of the turbocharger. This blocked the flow of the exhaust there by initializing the exhaust brake.

How exhaust brake works?
As mentioned above, exhaust brake retards the speed, there by reduces the speed of the vehicle. It can be used as a supplementary braking system which reduces the effort and increases the life of the service brakes to 2 to 3 times.
As shown in the drawing in the video, you can see the location of exhaust braking valve (butterfly valve) at the out let of the turbocharger.
This valve closes partially when the driver actually releases the fuel throttle. This results in the pressure to increase in the exhaust stream i.e. the exhaust manifold and inside the cylinder. This creates a negative torque inside the cylinder which slows down the piston thereby the crank shaft, connecting rod, flywheel slows down. This creates a mechanical lock, if still the clutch is in engaged position and this will continuously slows down the output shaft of the transmission. Thus drive reaching the differential will reduce there by slowing down the tyres. This exhaust brake pressure reduces the speed of the vehicle and creates a breaking effect.

The biggest advantage of exhaust braking is that
1. It can avoid the occurrence of engine over run.
2. Enhances the life of the service breaks from 2 to 3 times.
