On the way to explore Azrou Morocco,
we stopped at the Rassemblement naturel des singes animal park
within the Cèdre Gouraud Forest (Cedar Tree Forest) in the middle Atlas Mountains to visit the Barbary Macaque monkeys.
We shared fruit and nuts from our picnic basket with the friendly monkeys there.
We will also share a few facts about them
as we share the best moments of our several hour interaction
with these sweet beings sharing our world.
My heart melted when I looked into their innocent,
loving eyes.
Each troop of monkeys has a hierarchy in both
the female and male populations yet the entire troop, including the male monkeys,
are highly involved in the care of each other
and especially of the baby monkeys.
They are seasonal breeders and typically breed in November and December
resulting in giving birth to a single infant in the spring and early summer.
The average lifespan of the wild Macaques is 22 years
with some males living as long as 25 years and some females living to be 30 years.
Their omnivorous diet includes plants roots, stems and bulbs
as well as the flowers and leaves, fruits, seeds.
They also eat insects and even small vertebrates such as frogs and lizards.
The Barbary macaques communicate through facial expressions
and use vocalizations for predatory threats or invasion of territory from other troops.
