‘GHAR BAZAR’ starring Sharmila Tagore, Shashi Kapoor, Shekhar Suman, Natasha, Mehmood, Gulshan Grover, Nilu Phule, etc. is a film of social relevance with underlining themes of woman empowerment, identity and survival. It also deals intensely with the mother-daughter relationship and the existence of woman trafficking and prostitution in our social set-up. The music of the film is by Usha Khanna. The duration of the film is 90 minutes and bears a ‘U/V’ censor certificate.
The film revolves around the protagonists ‘Gul’ (Sharmila Tagore) and ‘Rupa’ (Natasha) who are caught in the blacks and whites of society. ‘Gul’ loses ‘Rupa’ in the pursuit of time and money leaving ‘Rupa’ to live a miserable life which accidentally brings her to the threshold of prostitution. ‘Rupa’ as a prostitute learns the ways of the world, and fails to keep her dreams alive but comes across ‘Ravi’ (Shekhar Suman), a part of the same society who gives her a new meaning of life. ‘Gul’ in her crazy inclination to the world of glamour meets ‘Balam’ (Mehmood) who shuns her to the limits of the skin trade. Eventually ‘Gul’ and ‘Rupa’ meet to discover their buried relationship, while ‘Gul’ repents, ‘Rupa’ decides to live the life society has given her. ‘Ravi’ and her step brother ‘Mohan’ (Gulshan Grover) fight to bring her back from the dark reality of life and the clutches of ‘Kishan’ (Nilu Phule), a local pimp. The story deals with the trauma of the lives of ‘Gul’ and ‘Rupa’ who are engaged in defining their roles in a patriarchal society.
