Spain is not occupied by the Nazis, but under the dictator Francisco Franco enemies of the state are imprisoned in concentration camps. Max is sent to Miranda de Ebro, where among the prisoners is a group of Jews who had tried to escape from Nazi-occupied European countries.
Max Bornstein was born in Warsaw, Poland on November 12, 1921.He immigrated to Canada before the age of two, but returned to Europe in 1933, the same year Hitler came to power. When France fell to the Nazi, Max escaped but he ended up in a Spanish concentration camp. After the war, Max returned to Canada and he and his wife, Min were married for over sixty years. Max passed away in 2015.
