Armenian folk music and dance have deep roots since thousands of years within the culture of Armenian Highlands and have been passed down for generations. They often reflect the country's history, traditions, and values. Armenian folk music includes a variety of indigenous instruments such as the duduk, zurna, tar, saz, and oud. The duduk, a double-reed woodwind instrument, is one of the most iconic instruments in Armenian folk music. One of the most popular modern track is the Duduk song performed by Dzivan Gasparyan, soundtrack from "Gladiator" film.
Its melancholic and haunting sound can be heard in many traditional Armenian songs. Armenian folk dance is an integral part of the country's culture and is often performed during celebrations, such as weddings and festivals. There are many traditional Armenian dances, each with its own style and meaning. Some of the most popular Armenian folk dances include Yarkhushta, Kochari, and Shalakho.
Yarkhushta is one of the most powerful Armenian national military dances. The dancing men seem to exchange the weapons while bumping with their hands. This dance is usually perfomed before the battle to get motivated and ready for the fight. This dance was widely spread in Sasun.
Kochari is a typical, traditional Armenian dance that involves large groups of people dancing in a circle. "Kochari" is a pure Armenian name, can be etymologically explained only in the Armenian language. The name comes from կոչ [ koch ] արի [ ari ] which can be translated as the " call of the brave" or a "sign to come". The dance is said to represent the unity and solidarity of the Armenian people.
Shalakho is a slower, more romantic dance that is often performed at weddings. The dancers move in a circular motion and often hold candles or handkerchiefs. Armenian folk music and dance continue to play an important role in Armenia's cultural heritage, and many people around the world continue to appreciate and enjoy this unique art form.
