President Mobutu Sese Seko, facing the greatest threat to his
power in more than three decades of rule, failed to respond on
Thursday (10/04) to a rebel ultimatum for him to stand down.
Mobutu sent in troops on Wednesday to stop a demonstration in
support of prime minister Etienne Tshisekedi, detaining him
briefly before replacing him with an army general, invoking
emergency rule powers.
