Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the Orthodox Christmas service on Monday at Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral.
Officiating at the service, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill spoke about Russia's military operation in Ukraine.
He asked that "the terrible civil strife that torments the peoples belonging to the united Holy Rus', to historical Rus', will cease on the battlefield."
The Russian Orthodox Church, the world's largest Orthodox denomination, observes Christmas celebrations on Jan. 7 and holds the main worship service on night of Jan.6.
This is because certain Eastern Orthodox churches follow the ancient Julian calendar, which runs 13 days later than the Gregorian calendar, used by Catholic and Protestant churches.
Other Orthodox churches, including Greek and Ukrainian, celebrate Christmas on December 25, like Western churches.
