Our top story,... France and its European allies have announced that they will begin withdrawing troops from Mali. Give us the latest.
That's right. As you said,... France and its allies fighting Islamist militants in Mali will begin their military withdrawal from the country,... after nearly 10 years of armed unrest.
A statement signed by France and its African and European allies released on Thursday,... noted that "multiple obstructions" by the ruling military government meant that the conditions were no longer in place to operate in the African nation.
Meanwhile,... French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that the withdrawal does not mean France had failed its former colony,... adding that France's bases in Gossi, Menaka and Gao would be closed within the next four to six months.
France has had troops in Mali since 2013,... when it intervened to drive back Islamist militants advancing on the capital.
However,... the fight against the Islamist militants will continue in Niger,... which agreed to host European forces on the border near Mali and Burkina Faso.
