A timelapse sketch of the iconic Tower Bridge in London over a double page of a 5 x 8 inch (approx A5) landscape sketchbook.
This is how I would approach sketching on location, otherwise known as Urban Sketching.
I start with a basic pencil sketch so I can place my elements, get proportions and perspective roughly correct and make sure everything fits on the page. Then I usually grab my Lamy Safari fountain pen, however, that’s in a different country to me right now (lockdown kicked in so I do not have my full sketching kit) to do a more detailed illustration over the time. Instead of my fountain pen, I am currently using a fineliner pen (Copic, Micron or Uniball - whichever is lying about). I tend to draw my outlines with a 02 thickness, and then later when I go over a few lines to emphasise them (i.e. where shadows would be) I use a 03, 05 or 07 thickness depending on the line weight I want to achieve.
Once I’m happy with my lines, I splash on some watercolour! As I’m sure you can tell from the video I’m not overly careful, I like the effects of a loose splashy approach :) The main thing is to start with the light shades and keep layering darker and darker until you get the desired contrast.
