In this video we will look at the equation for CH3COOH + H2O and write the products.
When we add CH3COOH to H2O the CH3COOH will dissociate and break into H+ and CH3COO-. Since the H+ (often called a “proton”) and the CH3COO- ions are dissolved in water we can call them H+ (aq) and CH3COO- (aq). The aq stands for aqueous – something that is dissolved in water.
CH3COOH is a weak acid so only some of the H atoms will dissociate.
Finally, when placed in water the H+ will combine with H2O to form H3O+, the hydronium ion. So another way to write H+ (aq) is as H3O+ .
