TN assembly session: DMK and allies boycott governor’s address, Dhinakaran says speech doesn’t mention people’s issues
CHENNAI: The DMK and its allies -- the Congress and the IUML -- and an ally of the ruling AIADMK -- Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi -- boycotted Governor Banwarilala Purohit's address to the Tamil Nadu assembly on Monday.
As the governor started his speech, leader of the opposition M K Stalin said the party was walking out as the "governor is addressing the assembly where the government does not have the majority."
"The Election Commission has said that the AIADMK has only 111 MLAs supporting it. Instead of asking the government to prove its majority, the governor has agreed to address the assembly. This is totally against democracy," said Stalin.
The DMK opposed the governor going to various districts and cleaning the roads and meeting officials. "As the AIADMK government does not have a majority in the assembly, it is not opposing the governor meeting officials. It is worrisome that the ministers are praising the governor," said Stalin.
Asked whether the DMK would move a no-confidence motion in the assembly, Stalin told reporters that the party was waiting for the verdict of the Madras high court in a few cases on the issue.
Dhinakaran attends assembly
Sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran, who has been elected from RK Nagar, was present in the assembly. Dhinakaran criticised the government for not mentioning, in the governor's speech, various issues affecting the people.
"The speech does not mention evacuation of methane in delta districts. Similarly people living around the Kudankulam nuclear plant are scared as the materials used in the two reactors are not good. There was no mention about these in the governor's address. The governor must have asked the government to prove its majority instead agreeing to address the assembly," said Dhinakaran.
