Dear friends and followers welcome back to my channel! Today's video is about a very interesting topic, "How does WIFI work on airplanes?" I´m pretty sure many of you have seen advertisement for this new kind of service on aeroplanes. And a lot of airlines are suiting up the older and newer planes with WIFI antennas which are primarily installed on the upper part of the fuselage. If you´ve ever wondered what is below that little hump at the rear upper part of the fuselage, that´s the satellite antenna tracking Ka- or Ku-band satellites to receive and transmit your e-mails and other messages. And as you might not have known but airplane WiFi has been around since the mid 2000´s. At the time the ATG-system was state of the art, where you had two antennas installed on the airplane receiving and transmitting signals to land-based cell towers, very similar to the cellular network towers providing 4G LTE connection for your phone.
Over time the system advanced as the ATG system only had a narrow bandwidth allowing only 3 MBit/s at the consumer, therefore the satellite-based technology came to play. The Ku-band was introduced which was formerly used by the military. A ground-based satellite dish/antenna, sends an uplink towards a satellite, which reflects the signal towards the aeroplane. On top of the plane sits the bulky rotary antenna, which is comparable to your TV satellite dish attached to your home. It picks up the signal which is transmitted in the 11-20 GHz range, decodes the signal via the onboard server and sends to the onboard WiFi router. The speed was a lot faster than the ATG system but top out at 40-50 MBit/s. Unfortunately the system has a few disadvantages, one of them to mention is that the speed got slower and slower the more airplanes were transmitting and receiving over the same satellite. And the other setback is the large antenna, increasing the airplane weight and aerodynamic drag, therefore resulting in a higher fuel consumption. And who has to pay for that? YOU, the passenger!
Finally, I´ll mention the Ka-Band technology and what more is to come in the future.
I hope you enjoy this video!
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe
