Angela Merkel, Hillary Clinton, and now, Theresa May. Some of the world’s most famous politicians are women. Yet here in the UK, only 29% of MPs are female. Why are there so few women politicians? How do we encourage more women and girls to run for office? The secret lies in understanding the impact of role models and gatekeepers.
Christine Cheng is a Lecturer in War Studies at King’s College London. While her primary area of research is on post-conflict transitions, she has been a passionate advocate for gender equality for two decades. Most recently, she has called for removing the ban on women fighting in frontline combat in the British armed forces.
