The Norwegian Folk Museum on Oslo's Bygdoy peninsula provides a look at life in Norway during the past 200 years. There are 150 historic buildings in the open air museum, all of which were brought there from all corners of Norway and reassembled close to one another by age and original geographic location.

At the nearby ship museums, amongst others, is the Kon Tiki - Norweigian exporer Thor Heyerdahl's creation for proving that early South Americans crossed the Pacific to settle Polynesia in 1947.

The Gjoa was the first ship to transit the Northwest Passage by Roald Amundsen and it ended up in San Francisco for 66 years before it was returned to Norway in 1972. And Amundsen is a national hero. The Gjoa has been thoroughly restored and draws thousands of visitors each year.
