My name is John Wagner. I'm the Medical Director of the Hematopoietic Stem Cell and Cellular Therapy Program. The patients I deal with are those that are referred for cellular therapy and they generally have an underlying diagnosis of a bone marrow failure state or a hematological malignancy, or another cancer or rarely other disease that is amenable or treatable and, hopefully, curable with some form of cellular therapy.
When patients come in to see me, I first let them discuss what their understanding of why they're seeing me, what is their understanding of their underlying disease. Usually, about 75% of the time is spent on counseling, explaining the procedure, and there's plenty of time to ask questions, and I want to encourage patients to ask questions.
The important thing is when the patient comes in to see me, I will leave no stone unturned in terms of understanding of their medical record and, also, in terms of conveying them the appropriate recommendations in terms of treatment.
In terms of cancer, why patients should come to UVA? There's no other comprehensive cancer center in the state of Virginia.
