I get a variety of wild birds that come to my backyard in search of food, varying from small to large-sized birds. Often I will get tons of birds that come to my backyard at once. The most common birds that come include American Goldfinches, House Sparrows, Cardinals, Mourning Doves, and Blue Jays. Sometimes I put out a large pile of birdseed around and in my feeders, this causes them to scramble to eat the bird seeds. I will feed my birds with black oil sunflower seeds, millet, peanuts, and blocks of suet. All of the wild birds that come to my yard seem to enjoy black oil sunflower seeds. I enjoy watching the birds break the shell of the sunflower seeds with their beaks. I constructed a platform for the birds to eat off of. A platform feeder attracts a wider variety of species and ground-feeding birds. A platform provides a safe place for birds to feed on as they stand in the open, along with that it helps to protect them from predators.
Birds will often prevent smaller birds from getting close to the birdseed when there is not enough for others. Birds attempt to hoard more food for themselves, this is visualized in the video when the House Sparrows and Blue Jays come swooping onto the platform and the Goldfinches fly off. In flocks of birds, there is a pecking order in place the birds determine which individuals will receive priority of access to resources, particularly when they are limited and will often try to frighten others off away from their findings. More commonly larger birds will get more of the food than smaller birds.
I enjoy feeding wild birds in my backyards. Throughout the year I feed wild birds with a mix of sunflower seeds, peanuts, and millet on my bird feeders.
