How to use Ableton to Switch Quad Cortex Patches

Imagine this, you’re playing a gig and the show is going amazing. You’re playing well. The band is playing well. The tracks are working and going smoothly. Then you do the thing… You pressed the wrong preset. And no, I’m not talking about oh it was supposed to have delay and now it doesn’t. I’m talking about what should’ve been a clean sound in a part of song where it’s just you and the singer is now a stacked, loud, drive sound.
Well that happened to me… Multiple times. And before you say was it really that noticeable, I’d say yes it was.
So the problem is me. I pressed the wrong button- whether the buttons are just too close together, or I’m just not super precise with my feet when I’m wearing my chelsea boots… the problem is me. That’s why I’ve got a solution to help those of you who like me, who have ever in their history of playing pressed the wrong preset. This is how to get your Ableton playback to switch your Quad Cortex preset patches for you.
Now before you get worried about buying a bunch of extra equipment, stop All you need is a usb cable. The first step is to go into Ableton preferences and make sure the Quad cortex is showing up under the link tempo midi tab. For quad cortex in, make sure the remote box is checked. For quad cortex out, make sure the track box is checked.
Cool, so I have a very basic playback session here for you. The second step we’re going to do is make a blank midi track. Then we make a blank midi clip which you can either do by double clicking in the track region. Or you could record a blank clip into it. Doesn’t matter how you do it. You don’t need to put any notes, we just need the clip.
Third, you want to double click on your clip and in the bottom left hand portion of your screen you’ll want to go to the clip tab. Here you will see 3 parameters: bank, sub, and program. For the purpose of the quad cortex, Sub controls the setlist we are pulling from. Note they start from 1 not zero. So if the preset you want is in the factory presets list, that will be Sub 1. Then whatever your second setlist is, will be sub 2, and on and on. Program accesses the presets. In this case, preset 1a is 1, 1b is 2, and so on and so forth. Preset banks 1-16 are accessed this way. To get to preset banks 17-32 we change the bank tab to 2 and do the rest the same like so. So if we wanted to get to preset 18F in this setlist, we would have bank 2, sub 1, Program 14.
Now once we have a clip getting us to the correct preset for the song, we’ll want to be able to control the scene we need for each section of the song. To control scenes, we first need to make sure we are set to scene mode. Then we head over to the tools tab for the clip. Have the first box set to midi control, then the second box, pool up number 43 “LSB for CC 11 (Expression Controller). This will control your scenes. Here’s where the number system gets slightly complicated because our first scene, scene a we is now 0 instead of one. So you are going to automate parameter 43 to whichever scene you want. In this case, I start with scene E so I have it automated to a value of 4.
Perfect, so we are just going to do this same process but automate our scene changes for each part of the song. First I’ll press command r to name the clip. I’ll call this AL_Verby. Then I’m going to copy and paste the whole clip to the next change which happens at the top of the verse. Here I want scene A, so I’m going to set parameter 43 to 0. Let’s try it. Boom. We just repeat this process until we have our whole song covered.
Now for the moment of truth, I’m going to play through a bit of the song to see if the patch changes work, and so we can hear how they sound. =
And there you have it, that’s how you automate patch changes on the quad cortex. I find this to be particularly helpful if you are music directing while you play. It’s just one less thing to think about, so you can spend more of your brain power on listening to the band and working with the band. It’s also cool just as guitarist because it gives you the ability to just focus on performing, playing, and enjoying the show. Definitely worth a try!
