When we use cleaning products in our homes, it's easy to forget that they don't just disappear – what we tip down our drains can pollute streams and rivers, and eventually make its way to our oceans, entering the food chain by being eaten by fish and the likes.
It sounds scary, but there IS a solution to this, and it comes in the way of choosing natural alternatives than the chemicals you've become used to using.
P.S. It isn't advised to mix large quantities of bicarb and vinegar together in containers - leave that trick for the school science teacher.
So, you're wanting to reduce the amount of chemicals in your home? Great! There's so many products on the market that are just loaded with nasties, meaning every time you clean, you're breathing the concoction in! While there's obviously a time and a place for a really intense cleaner, some messes and spills can easily be cleaned up with a more natural alternative.
The natural cleaning methods to add to your life
Watch the video to see all the techniques, but if you want a written recipe for each of our methods, follow the measurements below!
All-Purpose Cleaner
Fill a spray bottle with half water, half white vinegar, then add an essential oil that you love the smell of – we'd suggest lavender, geranium, tea tree, orange peel or lemon! Mix it all together, then use it to wipe your bench, shelves, table or whatever else needs a clean!
Eliminate Carpet Smells
Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on the carpet, then leave it overnight. The next morning, vacuum it all up and voilà – no smells!
Oven Cleaner
Gosh do ovens get dirty! And while they do need a good scrub, the chemicals that are often offered are really harsh and require gloves and a mask to use. A natural alternative is mixing 1/2 of a cup of bicarbonate of soda with 1/4 cup of water in a bowl, then apply it to the oven glass (using a pastry brush works well!).
Close the oven and leave the mixture for 24 hours, then spray white vinegar mixture onto it. It will fizz, then once it's become foamy, wipe the grime away! You may need to scrape away some of the tougher stains. This mixture can also be used to clean grout, too.
Cleaning The Mattress After Bed Wetting
It happens to so many kids, and the clean-up is never fun! But by sprinkling bicarbonate of soda onto the wet patch, it will help soak up the moisture. Scrape and throw away the excess, then vacuum up the rest!
