Bengaluru is located in the southeast of Karnataka, on an east-west ridge in the Mysore Plateau of the Deccan Plateau, at an elevation of 3,020 ft (920 m) above sea level. It covers an area of 850 sq mi (2,190 sq km) and borders the districts of Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumkur, Mandya, and Ramanagaram.
The city's history dates back to around 890, according to a Kannada stone inscription found at the Nageshwara Temple in Begur. The British East India Company captured Bengaluru after winning the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799, but later returned administrative control to Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar III.
Bengaluru is a major center of India's information technology (IT) industry and is known as the "Silicon Valley of India".
