Look down at your guitar neck and name as many notes as you can. What success did you have? Were you at least able to name the notes along the 6th & 5th string?
You can test your ability to name notes on the guitar as much as you want, but if you don’t have a practice routine to help get better at them, your ability for knowing notes will unfortunately just stay the same.
The trick to knowing notes on the neck is to train yourself how to see intervals. One excellent approach to this is the study of distance between chord tone intervals (both vertically and horizontally). Once you learn how to spot interval distance your success for naming notes on the neck will go up considerably.
Virtually every single person who studies the guitar neglects note training. This is mostly because of the way we find ourselves practicing. We are either trying to learn songs, or we work on composed original ideas. Both of these are only about “playing for fun,” and they tend to keep our playing rather stagnant.
We cannot allow stagnation to happen. Not only is it not beneficial, but it gets in the way of advanced skill building. For best results, you’ll want to be able to get your chords and notes well known across the neck. The better you get at knowing your notes on the neck - the better guitar player you will become.
