STORYLINE
Undaunted by the escalation of tension in their home country Afghan traders are still maintaining trade routes through dangerous frontline areas of Afghanistan.
These traders are moving goods from Taliban held territory over to the Northern Alliance side of the frontline.
The traders cross the frontline at great risk often having to bribe smugglers and local warlords in order to negotiate delicate relations.
VOICE-OVER:
0002
Long distance haulage, Afghan-style.
0006
When it comes to keeping the channels of trade open, any mode of transport will do.
0012
But in the frontline areas of northern Afghanistan, it's a risky business.
0017
These traders are criss-crossing frontline territory between Taliban forces and the Northern Alliance.
Many have to bribe smugglers and local tribal warlords to get their goods through.
0027
This trader says he's crossing illegally. We have to pay money to smugglers, he says. If the Taliban catch us, they'll put us in prison.
0035
The risks may be great, but it's now a question of survival - not just for the traders but also for the remote communities they supply.
0043
At this market, vital supplies of grain and fruit have made it through.
0048
But as the bombardments and fighting escalate along the frontline, it's hard to say how much longer traders can keep running the gauntlet.
