Rinjani 100 race @ the mountainous region of Sembalun, Lombok, Indonesia.
Weather is very cooling at base altitude of 1160m.
The UTMB race series has 5 categories: 27km, 36km, 60km, 100km and 162km. With difficulty level usually surpasses that of Europe due to volcanic technical terrain, high altitude above 3000m as well as the ultimate DNF driver of a very robust cut-off time.
After a failed 2018 attempt at the 60km where I was cut-off at the last checkpoint after summiting Rinjani, I decided to re-attempt 36km with my lacklustre base fitness post-covid.
The terrain remains very challenging with loose volcanic sand/rocks after the first CP onwards. Dust kicked up by other runners envelops the high altitude 4km course to the summit making breathing more laborious in addition to reduced oxygen concentration.
The race organisers have been fantastic and the accommodation I booked Rautani @ Sembalun is very unique and beautiful with 3 adjacent modern tiny houses with a gazebo and an animal farm and fruit plantations from strawberries to avocados and apple trees.
I will re-attempt the 60km in 2025.
