Welcome to Conservation Skills in 10 Minutes or Less!
For over 100 years, federal, state, and tribal fish hatcheries have been raising trout and salmon for subsistence, recreational fishing and endangered species recovery. This series of short videos on the carrying capacity of a hatchery raceway will help biologists ensure they are providing enough water and space to keep their fish healthy.
This video segment provides a skill demonstration on how to estimate the average length of the fish in a raceway using sample count data. Average fish length is then used in both the Density Index and Flow Index calculations. After the demonstration, you will have an opportunity to practice the calculation.
Make sure to check out the other videos in this series on carrying capacity including calculating flow index, density index, and exchange rate.
