(30 Apr 2012) HEADLINE: Ill. cattle producer dismisses mad cow concerns
CAPTION: A California''s dairy producer has become the focus of intense scrutiny now that mad cow disease has been discovered in a dead cow. Still, an unrelated cattle producer in Illinois says the USDA system works well so there''s nothing to worry about. (April 25)
[SOT/] Mike Martz, cattle producer:
"mad cow would be very obvious. I mean, it''d be away from the group. It''d be acting strange. Nervous system, they''d have trouble standing. You couldn''t miss it.//The system actually works. Those tissues, that really the mad cow is in, is the brain and spinal cord and those tissues around that. And all that''s removed before it gets into the processing part of the processing animal//It''s good because the system works, the animals never got anywhere close to the food chain supply. And we do 40,000 head a year. We test for mad cow and all those animals have symptoms of mad cow. So the USDA system works. And this is one example of how it works// Oh, I don''t think there''s any secrets that anybody doesn''t know. I think that our food safety measures that we have in the United States. They protect all of us. I''m a consumer also. I have no problem with going and buying beef in the supermarket."
