After Bhishma’s vow, Satyavati marries King Shantanu, and they have two sons: Chitrangada and Vichitravirya. Both die young, leaving the throne without an heir. To preserve the lineage, Satyavati summons her son Vyasa, born from a previous union, to father children with Vichitravirya's widows. The result is three sons: Dhritarashtra, who is blind; Pandu, who becomes the king; and Vidura, born of a maid, who is wise but cannot inherit the throne. These sons would become the fathers of the Kauravas and the Pandavas, the central characters of the Mahabharata.
