The poem "The Deserted Village " by Oliver Goldsmith (published in 1770) is a work of social commentary condemning rural depopulation and the pursuit of wealth.

This musical adaptation by Paul Corfield Godfrey, with the original words adapted by Alun Alban Davies, is written for baritone solo, two trumpets and three trombones.
