Summary: Second Harvest Japan, a non-profit organization, is Japan's first incorporated food bank, and has been pioneering food banking in Japan since 2000. Second Harvest Japan was an exceptionally efficient and effective first responder to the 3/11 disasters.
- Providing infrastructure to recover surplus food and match it to non-profits.
- Transparent (full activity reports available), sound business principles.
- 3/11 -- 10/1: received over JPY120m in donations despite founder, Charles McJilton stating that the organization would not accept funding until a concrete plan had been drawn up for Tohoku - believes in organic growth.
- 3/11 2100-0130: passed out 4000+ servings of soup, bread and other foodstuffs to stranded commuters.
- 3/12 prepared and delivered 600 meals to Ueno Park as part of its normal operations. 3/13 Charles and a team left for Tohoku.
- 3/14 Two trucks had arrived in Sendai to begin distribution.
- First 6 weeks after disaster -- processed more than 3500 packages from individuals, and 400 tons of supplies to the region while maintaining 100% regular Kitchen and Pantry.
- June 2 -- Oct 13 -- 5203 care packages to 3/11 survivors .
- Working with national government of Japan to promote food banking.
